Mater celebrates its identity and heritage of the Sisters of Mercy during Mercy Week each September.

Mercy Week coincides with Mercy Day, Thursday 24 September, the anniversary of the day that Catherine McAuley— the founder of the Sisters of Mercy—opened the House of Mercy for the disadvantaged and marginalised in Baggot Street, Dublin in 1827.

The week-long celebration acknowledges staff for their ongoing commitment to Mater’s Mission and Values, culminating in the presentation of the prestigious Mercy Awards on Mercy Day, with the 2009 theme based on ‘be proud of what you do’.

Mater’s Executive Director of Mission Leadership, Madonna McGahan said Mercy Week provides an opportunity to reflect on our history, gather and give thanks as a team, and celebrate Mater as a values-driven organisation.

“People are the best part of working at Mater. I am privileged to work with people right across the organisation—many I work with, such as the outstanding winners of the Mercy Day Awards, are passionate about Mater’s Mission and Values, and are searching for ways to make a positive contribution,” Ms McGahan continued.

“The Sisters of Mercy in founding and then nurturing Mater for more than 100 years leave us with a great legacy, and in working here we are responsible for the legacy that we leave to those who come after us,” she said.

More than 80 Mercy Award nominations were received in 2009 across three categories: Clinical Services, Support Services and Team Award, with four winners accepting awards.

Clinical Services Award (joint winners):
Cheryl Clayton, Director of Clinical Services, Mater Private Hospital Redland
Jane Tilbury, Nurse Unit Manager, Ward 8 East (cardiac), Mater Children’s Hospital

Support Services Award:
