Mater. Exceptional People. Exceptional Care.

Christa Henry

2 August 1946—26 July 2009

“It was evident from Christa’s words and deeds that her two great loves in life were her family and Mater”—Dr John O’Donnell, CEO, Mater Health Services.

Christa Henry was an integral part of the Mater team for more than 27 years, and a true example of Mater values in action.

Mrs Henry’s career at Mater began in December 1981, fulfilling a secretarial role commissioned by Sister Eileen Pollard. She soon began to work for Sister Madonna Josey (then Director of Nursing for Mater Adult Hospital) before joining the Central Administration team with then Chief Executive Officer, Pat McGuire. Mrs Henry returned to her role as Executive Secretary in 2001 for Dr John O’Donnell.

“Christa’s knowledge of Mater, its history and its people were of inestimable value to me particularly early in my tenure, and her professionalism was underpinned by an unceasing attitude of service to others,” Dr O’ Donnell said.

“She provided unstinting support for almost anyone who asked for it, including the Board and individual Board Members, many of the Sisters in the Mater Convent, Sister Angela Mary, Grace Croft, Sister Josephine in Mater Archives and many others.

“She also brought extraordinary humility to her role, and if I paid her any compliment or thanked her for her outstanding work, she would dismiss my remarks with a wave of a hand and her characteristic phrase ‘oh, get away with you’,” he said.

Mrs Henry was devoted to the Sisters of Mercy, their Mission and Values, and the translation of that Mission into service to others through the health care ministry of Mater.

“There can be no better exemplar of Mercy, Dignity, Care, and Commitment revealed in action,” Dr O’Donnell said.

Mrs Henry passed away on 26 July 2009 and is survived by her husband, Douglas; her children David, Dianne, John and Andrew; her mother, Sophie; and sister, Margaret.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.
